Mid-Season Wrap up from INFINIT Athlete and Olympian Richard Hortness
INFINIT athlete and Olympic swimmer Richard Hortness has his eyes squarely fixed on the 2012 Olympic games in London. Enjoy this update about his mid-season preparations.
It has been a busy last three weeks with the first ever Pro Duel meet in Michigan where money was up for grabs if you were on the podium. Unfortunately when you take the best of the people that are training on the east coast of the country (Olympians, Olympic medalists and record holders etc) it meant that Joe and I went home empty handed, but filled with confidence for the next two weeks.
So, if you missed it from my website, I was 8th and 6th at the Pro Duel with some pretty good times. Between there and the next meet, Darcy and I got engaged so that was an exciting time for both of us. So, we're looking at a year after the Olympics in case you were going to mark your calendar :)
The next weekend we went to Etobicoke for Canada Cup, and I dropped my times from the Pro Duel down some more which added more confidence there. I won in Etobicoke so i ended up walking away with a prize money cheque of $200 which didn't quite cover the costs of the meet but did make it easier on the pocket book :)
So, this last weekend we went to US Nationals where you get a medal for being in the final... it's like a participation ribbon on steroids. The rowers in my house got jealous when they saw how big the medal was and compared it to the ones you get for winning or being on the podium at their world championships.
I guess that spoils the surprise a bit, but the times continue to drop as we hit the pool in Atlanta.
My 50 free was a good swim but nothing amazing. We are still working on getting a little more front-end speed back so that I can be in the mix for the win at Olympic trials in 3 months. I ended up coming 27th with a time of 23.25 after having gone a season best of 23.19 in the morning.
The exciting part was the 100! I was in a final with the most concentrated pool of Olympians and medalists and the likes that I have ever been in. Out of the 10 lanes, there were 4 international swimmers, 2 from France one from South Africa (Olympic Gold Medalist), and the rest of the Americans were all national team members except or maybe one of them (meaning nearly all of them also have at least one Olympic medal) So, the stage was set early in the morning when I raced another season best and went exactly 50.00 sec which just made me laugh. It is one of those barriers that people always try to get under. I have only done it twice in my life and never without a full body suit. So, I was hoping to be able to get under the cut at night but I made a couple of mistakes that did not necessarily cost me the 49 second mark but could have contributed to it. I ended up 9th in my heat but was happy to be able to hold my own in a field like that one.
Wow! Richard's preparations are going extremely well. Be sure to cheer for him at the Olympic trials in March. For more information about Richard and follow along as he gets closer to the 2012 Olympics, please visit his website at

Ajay Kohli: Last Year's Contest Winner
Ajay Kohli was the INFINIT Nutrition/7SYSTEMS DO MORE contest winner from 2010. Given a year's worth of nutrition and supplements, Ajay challenged himself in 2011 with focused training, coaching, and nutritional awareness. We were lucky enough to catch up with Ajay to find out how his year turned out.
Question: What are you up to today?
I am an NRG PT athlete working on being stronger on the bike, efficient in the water and faster on the run. With JJ Neely as my coach, I am currently in the best physical shape I have ever been. I am happy with my results of last season, and I am excited to work hard to reach new levels in my upcoming season.
Question: How do you feel about your year of racing and training in 2011?
I am really proud of how far I have come. I have spent this season educating myself on the relation between exercise and nutrition. This lifestyle change has allowed me to maintain a high level of physical fitness. I feel stronger as an athlete and was able to make the transition to 70.3 distance triathlons this season. I am proud of my accomplishments and grateful for all the support from my family and friends outside and within the triathlon community.
Question: What are some of this year's accomplishments?
My focus this season has been training and completing longer distance races. I have had a great season and I have accomplished great achievements including a "PB" on the swim, bike and run at Revolution 3 Cedar Point 70.3 race this past September. My key focus was pacing and nutrition for this half iron distance triathlon. My consistent time in the pool, long rides, weekly runs, power training and countless kilometers with a combination of a diet, including 7SYSTEMS and INFINIT custom formula, have all been contributing factors to my success. All of my accomplishments could not be possible without the help of my coaches.
Question: Where do you see yourself in the next few years?
In the next few years, I am striving to become stronger in all 3 disciplines and a well-rounded athlete. My future aim is to qualify for worlds 70.3 and consider working towards the 140.6 distance while remaining just as passionate about triathlons as the day I started this journey. I am also considering getting my coaching certificate down the road and share my knowledge, dedication, and drive with other athletes.
Question: What are your goals for 2012?
My goals for 2012 are to be healthy and to maintain my current level of fitness with proper nutrition and exercise. My race-day nutrition and recovery will also be a focus this upcoming season. I plan to work on my bike strength, swim stroke and continuing to run to become faster! I tentatively will be competing in the following races next year: Rev 3 Quassy Half Distance (June 2012), Kingston Long Course (July 2012), Coburg Olympic (August 2012), Rev 3 Cedar Point Half Iron Distance (Sept 2012) and Ironman Miami (November 2012).
I am working towards completing sub 5 hour for the half iron distance races and to PB in all 3 disciplines.
Thanks, Ajay. Congratulations on a superb 2011. With big goals attained in 2011 and even bigger goals on the horizon for 2012 and beyond, give Ajay a high five if you see him out training or racing.
Stay tuned for the upcoming announcement of the 2011 INFINIT Nutrition/7SYSTEMS contest!

CanoeKayak and RE:FORM Cyclepower Cycling Both Benefit From INFINIT
CanoeKayak Canada and RE:FORM Cyclepower professional women's cycling team are just two groups of professional-level and Olympic athletes that have seen improvement in their respective sports since using INFINIT Nutrition. Don't just take our word for it — see the testimonials below.
I use INFINIT products daily to ensure that my training efforts are maximized during my preparation for the Olympics.
Mark DeJonge — 2011 World Cup Bronze Medalist, K1 200 metres

INFINIT products for me help with on-water hydration. I don't get any heart burn when I mix the powder in full as directed, like I do with Gatorade powder mixed even at half strength. I have actually noticed a difference in my ability to train harder and longer using this product.
Ryan Cochrane — 2011 Pan American Champion, K2 200 metres
Thank you INFINIT! I have been competing as a professional cyclist for 4 years and have struggled to find the right nutrition for me. Despite careful preparation, I often find myself bonking during a heavy training ride or race. I have tried all kinds of supplements but nothing seemed to work until I tried INFINIT. For the first time, I was able to maintain the pace of a fast training ride or race for long periods of time without bonking. Even during long rides of over 4 hours, INFINIT was often the only nutrition I needed.
As a member of a pro women's cycling team, Re:Form Body Clinic / Cyclepower, I was privileged to receive sponsorship from INFINIT. Thank you INFINIT for helping me become a strong and competitive athlete.
Michelle Gauthier — Cyclist, RE:FORM/Cyclepower Women's Cycling Team

INFINIT Athlete Richard Hortness Update
Just another day in the life of INFINIT athlete and Olympian Richard Hortness — grueling workouts, fun with media, and continued progress towards the 2012 London Olympics.
From Rich:
So, I figured I would give a little update with what is going on with me. We are back into full training which means four mornings a week for two hour practices in the pool and four nights of the same a week. We are also way into the dryland season with 2 one hour drylands with our new conditioning coach, Bryn Jones, who is doing a great job. Finally, to top it all off, 3 one hour weight room sessions a week and one 45 minute one after Saturday morning practice to really put the nail in the coffin after a good week's work.
Things of note from the last week: Last Saturday, I got to live out one of my dreams with CTV's SuperBodies. I was "the talent" as a camera took over the pool, and we shot some really good footage. The dream was to have an entire 50m pool to myself with some cool lighting like you only see on TV. The segment that will air during the London Olympics in a few months. It will overlay the science of what goes on during our races with a composite of actual footage with a digital overlay in some cases. Should be a really cool segment to watch just before I take the stage in real life (fingers crossed).
Besides that, nothing too crazy to report. We have a training camp coming up at the end of the month. Swim Ontario is bringing a select few to Whistler...altitude, I guess? I go straight from there to Medicine Hat to do two talks. One with the community and one "many on one" session with developing athletes from the southeastern region of Alberta. Oh, the other thing I suppose that is good is that my weight continues to be stable, and I am starting to look like I did in 2008 which for me means good things as far as I am concerned.
